AstraZeneca is limbering up to announce full data from a huge pivotal trial of its new clot prevention therapy Brilinta on August 30, a big event for the drug maker as the product has the potential to become a crucial and well needed sales growth driver.

Expectations are already fairly high; to maintain excitement the presentation at the European Society of Cardiology needs to confirm that Brilinta has clear advantages over Plavix, with no new safety surprises, particularly regarding a risk of bleeding. The release of positive top line data in May (Brilinta data perks up Astra, May 11, 2009) prompted several analyst upgrades at the time and consensus for sales in 2014 currently sits at $686m. There remains plenty of room for those numbers to rise again if the fresh data is well received.
