Any strange noises coming out of Allée de la Recherche in Brussels today might well be the sounds of the management team of UCB cheering. If they are celebrating it is a sound that has not been heard for sometime at the group and will have been prompted by US approval for Vimpat in adult seizures.

The probable lifting of spirits at UCB was matched by the rise in the share price which climbed 9% to €19.74 in afternoon trading. The uplift is not surprising given that the product is not only critical to the group’s epilepsy franchise, but also to sentiment. Earlier this year Vimpat was rejected by both US and European regulators for use in diabetic neuropathic pain. In September, the group finally threw in the towel and withdrew the European marketing application. All of these events caused the shares to dive.
