Of the new drugs due to be launched this year, four are forecast to be blockbusters by 2012, with Actemra, the monoclonal antibody made by Roche to treat rheumatoid arthritis, leading the pack by a considerable margin.

According to consensus forecasts from EvaluatePharma, analysts see sales of the drug reaching $89m this year, jumping to an impressive $2.25bn in four years' time. Success hinges on regulatory clearance. With a PDUFA date of September 19 set in the US and a decision expected in Europe in the second half of the year, the latter part of 2008 will be a nail-biter for the Swiss pharma giant.
